How to Make Bubble Tea at Home

Posted: Aug. 12, 2026

Bubble tea, also known as boba tea, is one of Asia's most popular drinks—and you don't need to visit a specialty café to enjoy it. With a few simple ingredients, you can make a delicious bubble tea right in your own kitchen.

The best part? You can customize the tea, sweetness, milk, and toppings to create your perfect drink.

What Is Bubble Tea?

Bubble tea originated in Taiwan and has become popular around the world. While there are countless variations, the classic version usually combines tea, milk, sweetener, and chewy tapioca pearls.

The "bubbles" or "boba" are the chewy tapioca pearls typically found at the bottom of the drink. Other popular toppings include fruit jelly, popping boba, grass jelly, and pudding.

Ingredients

For approximately 2 servings, you'll need:

For the Tea

  • 2 cups of black tea
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • 2–3 tablespoons of brown sugar or your preferred sweetener
  • Ice

For the Tapioca Pearls

  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup of tapioca pearls
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar

Tip: You can usually find tapioca pearls at Asian grocery stores or online. Instant tapioca pearls are especially convenient for making bubble tea at home.

Step 1: Brew the Tea

Start by brewing your black tea.

Use approximately 2 tea bags or enough loose-leaf tea to make 2 cups. Let the tea steep for several minutes so it develops a strong flavor.

Because you'll be adding milk and ice later, making the tea slightly stronger than you normally would is a good idea.

Allow the tea to cool before assembling your drink.

Step 2: Prepare the Tapioca Pearls

Bring 1 cup of water to a boil and add your tapioca pearls.

Cook them according to the package instructions, since cooking times can vary between brands. Once they're soft and chewy, drain them.

Place the pearls in a small bowl and mix them with brown sugar. Let them sit for a few minutes so they can absorb the sweetness.

The finished pearls should be soft, chewy, and slightly sweet.

Step 3: Mix the Tea

Once your tea has cooled, it's time to build your drink.

Add the following to a large glass:

  1. A generous scoop of tapioca pearls
  2. Ice
  3. 1 cup of brewed tea
  4. 1/4 cup of milk
  5. 1–2 tablespoons of brown sugar or another sweetener

Give everything a good stir.

You can adjust the amount of milk and sugar depending on how creamy or sweet you like your bubble tea.

Step 4: Add Your Favorite Toppings

This is where you can get creative.

Try adding:

  • Fruit jelly
  • Popping boba
  • Grass jelly
  • Coconut jelly
  • Pudding
  • Aloe vera pieces
  • Extra tapioca pearls

You can even combine multiple toppings for a drink inspired by your favorite bubble tea shop.

Try Different Flavors

Once you've mastered classic milk tea, there are plenty of other flavors to experiment with.

Matcha Bubble Tea

Replace the black tea with matcha for a creamy, earthy drink.

Taro Bubble Tea

Taro milk tea has a sweet, creamy flavor and its recognizable purple color.

Brown Sugar Milk Tea

Skip the traditional tea base and combine milk with brown sugar syrup and tapioca pearls for a rich, dessert-like drink.

Fruit Tea

Use green or black tea with fresh fruit, fruit syrup, or juice instead of milk. Mango, passion fruit, peach, and strawberry are popular choices.

Tips for Better Homemade Bubble Tea

Use fresh tapioca pearls.
Tapioca pearls are best when they're freshly cooked. They can become hard or lose their chewy texture if they're stored for too long.

Don't make the tea too weak.
Ice and milk will dilute the tea, so a stronger brew helps maintain its flavor.

Adjust the sweetness.
You don't have to use as much sugar as a typical restaurant recipe. Start with a small amount and add more if needed.

Experiment with tea.
Black tea is classic, but green tea, jasmine tea, oolong tea, and other varieties can create completely different flavors.

Get a wide straw.
A traditional bubble tea straw is wider than a regular drinking straw, allowing the tapioca pearls to pass through.

Make Bubble Tea Your Own

Making bubble tea at home is surprisingly easy, and you don't have to follow one specific recipe. Once you have the basic ingredients, you can experiment with different teas, milks, sweeteners, and toppings.

Whether you prefer a classic Taiwanese milk tea, fruity iced tea, matcha, or brown sugar milk tea, making your own bubble tea gives you complete control over the flavor.

So grab your favorite tea, cook up some boba, and make your next bubble tea night a homemade one!
