5 Tips to Get Internet When Abroad

Posted: Jun. 29, 2026

Staying connected while traveling has become more important than ever. Whether you're navigating a new city, checking in with family, booking transportation, or working remotely, having reliable internet can make your trip much smoother. Here are five practical ways to ensure you have internet access wherever your travels take you.

1. Buy an eSIM Before You Travel

One of the easiest ways to get internet abroad is by purchasing an eSIM. Many modern smartphones support eSIM technology, allowing you to activate a mobile data plan without swapping your physical SIM card.

Benefits:

  • Set up your data plan before your flight.
  • Keep your primary phone number active.
  • Avoid searching for a SIM card after landing.

Be sure to check if your phone is eSIM compatible before purchasing a plan.

2. Purchase a Local SIM Card

If your phone is unlocked, buying a local SIM card can be one of the most affordable options for longer trips.

Local carriers often offer prepaid plans with generous amounts of data at a fraction of the cost of international roaming. SIM cards are commonly available at airports, convenience stores, and mobile carrier shops.

Best for:

  • Trips lasting more than a week.
  • Heavy data users.
  • Travelers staying in one country.

3. Use International Roaming (When It Makes Sense)

Many mobile carriers now offer international roaming packages that let you use your existing phone plan abroad.

While this option is incredibly convenient, it's important to compare pricing before you travel. Roaming can become expensive if you don't have an international plan.

Always check:

  • Daily roaming fees
  • Included countries
  • Data limits
  • Speed restrictions

4. Take Advantage of Free Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi is widely available in many places, including:

  • Airports
  • Hotels
  • Cafés
  • Restaurants
  • Shopping malls
  • Libraries

While convenient, public Wi-Fi networks can pose security risks. Avoid accessing sensitive accounts such as online banking unless you're using a trusted Virtual Private Network (VPN).

5. Rent or Buy a Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot

A portable Wi-Fi hotspot (also known as a pocket Wi-Fi) lets multiple devices share a single internet connection.

This is an excellent choice for:

  • Families
  • Groups traveling together
  • Remote workers
  • Travelers carrying multiple devices

Although it requires carrying an extra device, the convenience and flexibility often outweigh the downsides.

Having reliable internet while abroad doesn't have to be difficult. Whether you choose an eSIM for convenience, a local SIM for affordability, or a portable hotspot for flexibility, planning ahead can save you money and reduce travel stress.

Before your trip, compare your options based on your destination, length of stay, and expected data usage. A little preparation goes a long way toward ensuring you stay connected throughout your journey.

Safe travels and happy exploring!
